The city was founded in 1772 by Zackquill Morgan. Morgantown is home to West Virginia University, the state's largest public university. The city has a total population of 30,284, and the metropolitan area has a population of 138,176. Morgantown is located in north-central West Virginia, at the confluence of the Monongahela and Cheat Rivers. The city is situated in a valley with three major hills: Haystack Mountain to the east, Sabraton Hill to the south, and Suncrest to the west. Downtown Morgantown is located on a flat plain between these hills. The Tygart Valley River, a tributary of the Monongahela, runs through the city.
