Ljubljana Castle sits on a wooded hill above Slovenia’s capital, with a history stretching back to the 11th century and settlement on the site dating to around 1200 BC. Rebuilt extensively in the 15th century to defend against Ottoman incursions, it has served over the centuries as a fortress, a residence for the provincial governor, a barracks, and even a prison.
Today the castle houses the interactive Slovenian History Exhibition, tracing the country from Roman times through the World Wars to independence, plus the Museum of Puppetry and the Chapel of St George. The Outlook Tower offers sweeping views over Ljubljana’s red rooftops and the surrounding hills.
A 70-meter funicular connects the Old Town near the central market to the castle grounds, which are free to wander; tickets are required for the tower, chapel, and history exhibition.
