Rathausplatz is the grand public square in front of Vienna’s neo-Gothic City Hall (Rathaus), built between 1872 and 1883 to designs by architect Friedrich von Schmidt as part of the Ringstrasse redevelopment. The square briefly bore the name “Adolf Hitler Platz” during the Nazi annexation of Austria but reverted to Rathausplatz after 1945, and today it is one of Vienna’s most active gathering spaces, hosting outdoor concerts, film screenings, and markets throughout the year.

The square transforms with the seasons: a Christmas market with dozens of wooden stalls draws crowds each December, an open-air ice rink covers the plaza in winter, and the summer Musikfilmfestival screens free opera and concert films on a giant outdoor screen nightly. On New Year’s Eve, thousands of Viennese gather here to waltz at midnight, making Rathausplatz one of the city’s signature celebration sites.

As a public square, Rathausplatz is accessible at all hours and free to visit, though individual festival stalls, rinks, and screenings each run their own posted schedules. Its central location on the Ringstrasse puts it within easy walking distance of the Burgtheater, Parliament, and Vienna University.
