The Houston Zoo is a 55-acre zoo in Hermann Park operated as a non-profit and home to more than 6,000 animals across roughly 900 species. Following a major centennial renovation completed in 2023, the zoo added the Galapagos Islands habitat, an expanded McNair Asian Elephant area, and a redesigned front plaza.
Highlights include an Asian elephant herd, southern white rhinos, a Malayan tiger, western lowland gorillas, African lions, and a hands-on Children’s Zoo where visitors can feed giraffes. The zoo is one of the most visited attractions in Houston and one of the most-attended zoos in the country.
The Houston Zoo is open daily; standard hours run 9 AM to 5 PM with last entry at 4 PM, though the zoo shifts to shorter 8 AM to 4 PM hours during the hottest part of August.
