Founded in 1953, the Akron Zoo is a 50-acre nonprofit conservation zoo just west of downtown Akron, on Edgewood Avenue. Families come for its walkable size, its grizzly bears, and seasonal events that draw crowds after dark.
The zoo is home to more than 700 animals representing over 100 species (Yelp; Downtown Akron Partnership). Grizzly Ridge is the most popular area. Its rocky, wooded habitats hold grizzly bears alongside other North American wildlife. Pride of Africa brings lions and other savanna species, while Journey to the Reef adds an aquarium element with tropical fish and touchable marine life. Between exhibits, kids head for the train and the carousel. The compact layout lets small legs cover the full loop in a few hours.
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
Arrive at opening on weekdays for active animals and thinner crowds. Summer weekends and school-break days run busiest. Members should not reserve general admission online. They enter by showing a digital membership card and photo ID. Everyone, including members, must buy tickets in advance for special events such as Boo at the Zoo in October and Wild Lights during the holidays (Akron Zoo). Membership also earns discounted admission at more than 150 accredited zoos and aquariums nationwide (Akron Zoo). Check the zoo’s website for seasonal hours before you go. The zoo sits a short drive from downtown Akron’s restaurants and the Akron Civic Theatre.
