Vondelpark is Amsterdam’s best-known city park, a 47-hectare green expanse that draws more than 12 million visitors a year. It opened in 1865 as “Nieuwe Park” and was designed by landscape architect Jan David Zocher in the fashionable English landscape style, created on former marshland through the efforts of prominent Amsterdam citizens. In 1867 it was renamed in honor of the Dutch poet and playwright Joost van den Vondel, whose bronze statue by Louis Royer still stands in the park today, and the grounds reached their current size by 1877.
The park is filled with notable features, including an open-air theatre that hosts free concerts, dance, and theatrical performances from May to September, and the distinctive blue circular Tea House alongside the neo-Renaissance Vondelparkpaviljoen, both dating to the 1930s. The Rosarium rose garden adds seasonal color, and the historic 1878 pavilion designed by W.H. Hamer Jr. now houses a restaurant with a terrace overlooking the pond.
Vondelpark is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with completely free admission, making it a flexible stop whether visitors want an early morning jog, a midday picnic, or an evening stroll. Locals use it constantly for cycling, picnicking, and simply relaxing, so arriving with a bike or blanket lets travelers experience the park the way Amsterdammers do.
