Yamazato is the traditional kaiseki restaurant inside Hotel Okura Amsterdam, on Ferdinand Bolstraat at the southern edge of De Pijp near the Amstel canal. In 2002 it became the first kaiseki restaurant outside Japan to earn a Michelin star, and it still holds one in the 2025 MICHELIN Guide Netherlands (MICHELIN Guide).
The kitchen cooks only set menus, with no à la carte. Each course follows the season: delicate appetizers, sashimi, simmered and grilled dishes, then rice and a sweet finish, using ingredients sourced from Japan (Menu to Taste). Staff in kimonos serve at an unhurried pace. Tables overlook a quiet Japanese garden, which sets a contemplative, low-lit mood. That calm suits anniversaries and proposals. Tripadvisor diners rate it 4.4 out of 5 across more than 1,700 reviews (Tripadvisor).
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
Reserve well ahead for weekend dinners, especially in December and during the spring tulip season. You can book directly through the Hotel Okura website. Lunch costs less and is easier to book than dinner. Request vegetarian or vegan kaiseki when you reserve, because the kitchen needs advance notice. The dress code is smart. The Okura sits within walking distance of De Pijp metro station on line 52 and of the Albert Cuypmarkt.
