Albert Park is Auckland’s oldest formal city park, a sloping green block on Princes Street between the University of Auckland and the CBD’s office towers. Office workers, students and travellers come here for shade, Victorian landscaping and a break from Queen Street traffic.
The park occupies the site of the Albert Barracks, a colonial military post from the 1840s. A surviving section of the barracks’ stone wall still stands in the neighbouring university grounds. The ornate cast-iron fountain at the centre dates from the park’s early years in the 1880s, and gravel paths radiate from it through clipped lawns and seasonal flowerbeds. Look for the statues of Queen Victoria and Sir George Grey. Overhead, mature Moreton Bay figs, oaks and plane trees create dense canopy. Beneath the lawns lies a network of Second World War air-raid tunnels, now sealed but part of the site’s layered history.

Entry is free and the park is open at all hours. Weekday lunchtimes fill the benches and lawns, so early mornings or late afternoons are calmer for photos and picnics. The flowerbeds look their best in spring and summer, from October to March. The Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki sits at the park’s Kitchener Street edge, and Old Government House is a short walk east. Britomart Station is roughly 15 minutes away on foot, and several city bus routes stop along Wellesley Street.
