Downtown Terminal is Auckland’s main ferry hub, located on Quay Street at the foot of the CBD. It pairs the 1912 Ferry Building, a sandstone-and-brick Edwardian Baroque landmark, with modern piers that send commuters and day-trippers across the Waitematā Harbour.
Architect Alexander Wiseman designed the Ferry Building for the Auckland Harbour Board. Its clock tower, arched windows and granite base still anchor the waterfront, and Heritage New Zealand lists it among the city’s most significant historic structures. Restaurants and bars now fill its ground floor. Behind the façade, the contemporary pier area handles frequent sailings to Devonport, Waiheke Island, Rangitoto, Half Moon Bay and other harbour points. The adjacent Te Wānanga public space on Quay Street adds seating and harbour views, which makes the 1912 stonework and the newer steel-and-glass waterfront easy to compare in one walk.
