The Boll Weevil Cafe and Sweetery is a family-run Southern cafe and wine bar at 10 James Brown Blvd in downtown Augusta, a short walk from the Augusta Riverwalk. Locals and visitors come for its dessert case of more than 30 homemade cakes, pies, and sweets, which many guests order before they’ve even looked at the entrées.
George Harrison opened the restaurant in 1990, and his son William runs it today (AllBiz). The main dining room sits inside a former cotton warehouse with its original hand-hewn beams. The restaurant dates the building to before 1850 (Boll Weevil). The kitchen’s “Southern Delights” menu includes fried green tomatoes and shrimp and grits, alongside sandwiches, soups, and salads. Wine lovers can choose from a long list of wines by the glass and bottle (Yelp).
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
Weekday afternoons are the quietest time to visit. Friday and Saturday evenings fill up with dinner and dessert crowds. Masters Tournament week in early April brings the heaviest demand of the year, so expect waits and plan ahead. If you only want something sweet, stop in after dinner elsewhere for a slice of cake and a glass of wine. Before you go, check current hours and the menu on the official website. Afterward, walk off dessert along the Savannah River on the Riverwalk, or head to the nearby Augusta Common and the Broad Street shops.
