Arc de Triomf is a 30-meter red-brick monument built by architect Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas as the main gateway to Barcelona’s 1888 World’s Fair, its Neo-Mudéjar facade carved with symbolic reliefs including the inscription “Barcelona rep les nacions” (“Barcelona welcomes the nations”) and the coats of arms of Spain’s 49 provinces. Unlike most triumphal arches, it wasn’t built to commemorate a military victory — it was designed purely as a ceremonial entrance welcoming visitors to the fair.
The arch sits at the top of Passeig Lluís Companys, a wide, palm-lined pedestrian promenade that leads directly into Parc de la Ciutadella, making it a natural starting point for a walk through one of Barcelona’s most popular parks. It’s not possible to go inside the arch or climb to the top except during rare special events like Open House Barcelona.
The monument and surrounding plaza are open to the public at all hours and free to visit, and the Arc de Triomf metro station (L1) sits right beneath it, making it an easy stop whether arriving by metro or bus lines H16, V19, or 120.
