The European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM) occupies Palau Gomis, an 18th-century palace on Carrer de la Barra de Ferro in the Born district of Ciutat Vella. It is Barcelona’s dedicated showcase for figurative painting and sculpture of the 20th and 21st centuries. Opened in 2011 by the Fundació de les Arts i els Artistes, it draws visitors who prefer skilled realism to abstraction.
Inside, restored stone staircases, a central courtyard and high-ceilinged salons frame a permanent collection of contemporary realist work by Spanish and international artists. Bronze and marble sculptures of the human body hold some of the most striking spaces. Rotating temporary exhibitions keep the walls changing. The museum also hosts the international Figurativas painting and sculpture competition, and finalist works often appear in the galleries. In the evenings, the palace regularly stages intimate Spanish guitar and classical concerts.
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
MEAM traditionally opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and closes on Mondays. Confirm current hours and ticket prices on the official website before you go.
Weekday mornings are the quietest. Tour groups heading to the Picasso Museum around the corner on Carrer de Montcada crowd the lanes from late morning, especially from June to September. Book concert tickets in advance, because seating is limited.
Jaume I station on Metro line L4 is about a five-minute walk away. Pair your visit with the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar and the Born Centre de Cultura i Memòria, both an easy stroll from the museum.
