Plaça de Catalunya is the geographic and symbolic heart of Barcelona, a roughly 50,000-square-meter square where the medieval old city meets the 19th-century Eixample district. It took shape after the old city walls came down in 1854 and was formally inaugurated by King Alfonso XIII in 1927, designed as an open-air museum with nearly 30 sculptures by Catalan artists.
The square’s centerpiece is the Font dels Sis Putti fountain from 1926, surrounded by gardens, monuments, and broad pedestrian plazas that host everything from concerts and trade fairs to demonstrations. It also serves as a launch point into the city: the Gothic Quarter’s medieval streets begin just steps away, and La Rambla leads south from here toward the harbor.
Plaça de Catalunya is open 24 hours and is a major transit hub, served by the Catalunya metro station on lines L1 and L3. Plan to pass through on your way to nearby sights rather than as a standalone stop.
