The USS KIDD Veterans Museum sits on the Mississippi River levee at 305 S River Road in downtown Baton Rouge. It is home to USS KIDD (DD-661), a World War II Fletcher-class destroyer and National Historic Landmark nicknamed the “Pirate of the Pacific.” History buffs, military enthusiasts and families come here for one of the most complete WWII destroyer restorations in the country.
Under normal operations, visitors can explore roughly 80% of the ship across five levels, restored to her 1945 configuration. The ship is currently away for overhaul, so the shoreside museum is the main attraction for now. Inside, you’ll find a P-40 fighter aircraft, detailed military ship models, a WWI trench exhibit, a full-scale replica of the gun deck of USS Constitution (“Old Ironsides”) and the Louisiana Veterans Hall of Honor. Outdoors, the Louisiana Memorial Plaza honors the state’s service members lost in combat. An A-7E Corsair jet stands as a memorial to Vietnam veterans.
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
Before you go, check the official site for current hours, ticket prices and updates on the ship’s return. Weekday mornings are quieter than weekends, which can draw school groups and families. Groups should request tours in advance. Ask about the overnight camp-out programs, which are popular with scouts. Afterward, walk to the Old State Capitol, the Louisiana Art & Science Museum or the Shaw Center for the Arts, all within a few blocks along the downtown riverfront.
