Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden is Hungary’s oldest zoo, tracing its roots to the 1820s-30s and opening to the public in 1866. Spread across 18.4 hectares, it combines historic Art Nouveau animal houses with a botanical garden and palm house that predate most of the surrounding exhibits.
The grounds are organized into themed zones, including an African savannah section, an India zone with big cats, and an Australia area, alongside dedicated elephant, primate, reptile, and aquarium buildings plus an aviary and flamingo enclosure.
The zoo is open daily year-round, with tickets available at the gate or online in advance; ticket offices and animal houses close earlier than the grounds, so plan the day’s end accordingly.
