Heroes’ Square (Hősök tere) is Budapest’s grandest public square, built in 1896 to mark the 1,000th anniversary of the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin. At its center rises the 118-foot Millennium Monument, ringed by bronze statues of the seven Magyar chieftains on horseback and topped by a figure of the Archangel Gabriel.
Behind the column, sweeping colonnades hold statues of Hungarian kings and statesmen, while the Memorial Stone of Heroes honors those who died defending the country over a thousand years. The square anchors the UNESCO-listed Andrassy Avenue and sits at the gateway to City Park, flanked by the Museum of Fine Arts and the Palace of Art.
Heroes’ Square is free and open around the clock, reachable via Metro Line M1 (Hosok tere station). Combine a visit with the nearby Szechenyi Thermal Bath and City Park for a full day exploring this end of Andrassy Avenue.
