Al-Azhar Park opened in 2005 on a 30-hectare site in Cairo’s Darassa area, transformed from a centuries-old rubble mound into green space funded by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. The project commemorates the Fatimid founding of Cairo in 969 and uncovered a long stretch of the 12th-century Ayyubid city wall during construction.
The landscaped grounds are inspired by historical Islamic gardens, with fountains, a small lake, and pathways leading up to views of the nearby Cairo Citadel.
Late afternoon, roughly 4 to 7 PM, is the best time to visit for cooler air and golden-hour skyline views; weekday mornings are quieter, while summer midday sun offers little shade.
