Historic Yates Mill County Park protects Wake County’s last operable water-powered gristmill, an 18th-century mill on Lake Wheeler Road in south Raleigh. The 174-acre park and wildlife refuge, managed by Wake County in partnership with NC State University, draws over 160,000 visitors a year (Wake County).
The restored mill sits beside a millpond fed by Steep Hill Creek. Visitors can watch herons, turtles, and migrating waterfowl from the boardwalk or follow wooded trails along the water. Anglers can fish from the shore. Inside the A.E. Finley Center for Education and Research, exhibits trace the region’s agricultural history and the mechanics of milling grain. Guided tours of the mill show its wooden gears, millstones, and waterwheel. Admission to the park and the mill tours is free (Visit Raleigh).

The park grounds are open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset. The Finley Center is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mill tours run from March through November, and tour times are limited, so check the “Programs and Events” listings on the Wake County site before you go. Fall weekends get busy. Weekday mornings are quieter and better for spotting wildlife. The park closes on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. Plan on driving, since public transit options are limited. NC State’s Centennial Campus and Lake Wheeler Park are a short drive away.
