Nauticus is downtown Norfolk’s maritime discovery center, set on the Elizabeth River at 1 Waterside Drive. Its main draw is the Battleship Wisconsin, an Iowa-class battleship moored beside the museum. Families, naval history fans, and science-minded visitors come for one ticket that covers interactive exhibits, aquarium touch tanks, and a self-guided walk across a WWII-era warship.
Inside the main building, kids gravitate toward the shark touch pool and hands-on exhibits about ocean science, weather, and the working port. Nauticus calls its educational approach “STEM to STERN.” The free Hampton Roads Naval Museum, run by the U.S. Navy, covers more than two centuries of regional naval history. Outside, the Wisconsin (BB-64) is the centerpiece. Commissioned in 1944, it served in World War II and Korea, then fired Tomahawk missiles during the 1991 Gulf War. Its decks, 16-inch gun turrets, and towering superstructure make the ship’s scale clear up close. Nauticus also runs the Sail Nauticus community sailing center and the Schooner Virginia.
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
General admission includes both the museum and the self-guided battleship tour (Nauticus). The city lists prices of $19.95 for adults and $16 for children ages 3–12, with children 2 and under free (City of Norfolk). Prices and seasonal hours change, so confirm both before you go. Weekday mornings outside summer are the quietest times to visit. Plan on at least three hours, and wear sturdy shoes for the ship’s steep ladders. Afterward, you can stroll Town Point Park or eat at Waterside District next door.
