EcoVivarium is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit reptile sanctuary and living museum at 641 E Pennsylvania Avenue in Escondido. It houses rescued reptiles, amphibians, and arthropods, and families come here to hold, touch, and learn about animals most people only see behind glass.
The organization began in 2008 as a mobile outreach program that brought animals to schools, libraries, scout troops, and parties. It still runs that program today (AllBiz). At the Escondido site, the signature experience is the Walk-In Gold Tour. Trained staff guide guests through supervised, hands-on encounters with resident “Animal Ambassadors,” which include snakes, lizards, frogs, and invertebrates (EcoVivarium). Each animal has a rescue backstory, and staff share these stories to teach responsible pet ownership. The sanctuary also handles reptile adoptions and relinquishments.
