La Piedra del Peñol is a massive granite monolith near Guatapé, Colombia, reached by a zigzag staircase of 740 steps built into a natural crack in the rock.
Most visitors take 15 to 20 minutes to climb to the summit platform, which offers sweeping views over the emerald reservoir and its maze of islands and peninsulas below. The rock sits about two hours from Medellín and is usually paired with a visit to the colorful town of Guatapé.
Arriving at opening time, ideally on a weekday, avoids the queues that build at the staircase’s bottleneck points by mid-morning on weekends and holidays.
