Vetter’s Alt Heidelberger Brauhaus is a working brewpub on Steingasse in Heidelberg’s Altstadt, a short walk between the Heiliggeistkirche and the Old Bridge. Since opening in 1987, it has brewed its own beer on site and paired it with hearty Bavarian and regional cooking. Beer travelers come for one bottle in particular: Vetter 33, the doppelbock that once held the Guinness record as the world’s strongest beer.
Copper brewing kettles stand in the dining room, so you drink a few meters from where the beer is made. The core lineup includes an unfiltered Helles, a Dunkel and a Weizen, with seasonal specials rotating through. Vetter 33 runs to roughly 10.5% ABV, so order it as a tasting pour. The kitchen sticks to brewhouse staples: crisp schnitzel, roast pork knuckle, sausages and soft pretzels. Dark wood, long shared tables and historic walls set the tone. According to the brewery’s official site, the cooking is “down-to-earth Bavarian cuisine” with regional specialties.
