Lyon Air Museum occupies a hangar at 19300 Ike Jones Road in Santa Ana, on the west side of John Wayne Airport. The collection focuses on World War II-era aviation alongside rare military vehicles, vintage automobiles and motorcycles, which draws history buffs, aviation fans and families from across Orange County.
The late Maj. Gen. William Lyon, a decorated Air Force officer and homebuilder, founded the museum to honor what it calls “The Greatest Generation in Aviation” (Lyon Air Museum). Restored warbirds and transport aircraft share the polished floor with wartime staff cars, military motorcycles and period memorabilia. Docents, many of them veterans or retired pilots, often share stories you won’t find on the placards. Commercial jets taxi just beyond the hangar doors, which keeps the setting firmly tied to working aviation. The same hangar also hosts weddings, galas and corporate banquets among the aircraft.
