AUDIOVERSUM is an interactive science center devoted entirely to sound and human hearing, set at Wilhelm-Greil-Straße 23 in central Innsbruck. Opened on January 31, 2013 and backed by the Innsbruck-based hearing-implant company MED-EL, it draws families, school groups and curious audiophiles who want to understand how the ear turns vibration into meaning (Audioversum).
The main exhibition, “Adventure Hearing” (Abenteuer Hören), invites visitors to play with frequency, echo and resonance at hands-on stations, with the regional tourism board counting 18 interactive exhibits (Innsbruck Region). You can feel vibrations through your body, test the limits of your own hearing and trace the path of sound through the inner ear. The MED-EL World exhibition, launched the same year, explains how cochlear implants restore hearing, which makes the visit as much about medicine and technology as about acoustics. Rotating special exhibitions add fresh themes.
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
Weekday mornings bring school groups, so families seeking quieter stations should aim for afternoons. Rainy days and winter weekends fill up quickly as locals look for indoor options. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours, and check current hours and ticket prices on the official visitor page before you go, since schedules shift around holidays. The center sits a short walk from Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof and Landhausplatz, so you can easily pair a visit with a stroll down Maria-Theresien-Straße toward the Golden Roof.
