Jack Stack Barbecue’s Freight House location occupies a restored rail freight building at 101 W 22nd St, on the edge of Kansas City’s Crossroads Arts District and a short walk from Union Station. It is the flagship of a family barbecue business whose roots trace to a storefront Russ Fiorella opened in 1957. Locals and visitors come for hickory-cooked Kansas City barbecue served in a sit-down dining room.
Inside, exposed brick, heavy timber beams and tall windows recall the building’s railroad past. The menu runs well beyond pulled pork. Order the burnt ends, the crown prime beef short ribs and the lamb ribs. Add the hickory-pit beans and the cheesy corn bake, two sides regulars rarely skip. Steak and seafood dishes share the menu, so groups with mixed appetites can all order well. The bar pours local beers and bourbons, and patio seating opens in warmer months.
