The Ewing Gallery of Art + Architecture occupies the first floor of the Art + Architecture Building on Volunteer Boulevard, at the heart of the University of Tennessee’s Knoxville campus. Founded in 1981, this professionally managed university gallery draws students, faculty, and curious travelers with free exhibitions of historical and contemporary art and architecture.
Exhibitions rotate throughout the academic year and tie directly into the curricula of UT’s School of Art and College of Architecture and Design, so a single visit might pair drawings by a working architect with a show of contemporary painting or sculpture. Spring is the gallery’s busiest season. It hosts the annual student art competition, the BFA capstone exhibition, and third-year MFA shows, which let visitors see emerging Tennessee talent before it reaches commercial galleries (UT School of Art). Exhibitions, receptions, and lectures are free and open to the public (UTK Engage).
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
The gallery opens six days a week. It stays open late on Thursdays and offers afternoon hours on Sundays, which are the quietest times to visit. Check the events calendar for opening receptions and artist talks. The schedule also lists shows at the affiliated UT Downtown Gallery on Gay Street. Campus parking is limited, so use a nearby visitor garage. Avoid Saturdays when the Vols play at home, because Neyland Stadium is a short walk away and game-day crowds fill the area.
