Rynek Underground is an archaeological branch of the Museum of Krakow, set about four metres beneath Kraków’s Main Market Square. It occupies the medieval layers uncovered during excavations of the square between 2005 and 2010, and it draws visitors who want to see the city’s trading past at the level where it happened.
Glass walkways run over original cobbled routes, timber road surfaces and the foundations of medieval merchant stalls. Displays include Kraków denars, iron tools, pottery and the remains of a medieval cemetery with skeletons left in situ. Scale models, holograms, touchscreens and projections onto curtains of mist rebuild the 13th-century market. These effects help families and casual visitors follow the story. History enthusiasts can spend time with the finds themselves and with the trade routes that once linked Kraków to the rest of Europe.
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
