Rotstockhütte is a seasonal mountain hut at 2,039 m on the Poganggenalp, at the foot of the Schilthorn above Lauterbrunnen. Hikers come for simple dorm beds, breakfast included with the stay, and front-row views of the Mönch and Jungfrau (SAC).
Guests share mixed-gender dormitories, and the hut sleeps up to 43 people (PeakVisor). The facilities are basic: a restaurant, drinking water, and hearty meals after a long climb. Most visitors arrive on foot from Mürren or Gimmelwald, and many are trekking the Via Alpina toward the Sefinenfurgge pass. The meadows around the hut fill with alpine flowers in early summer. Evenings are quiet, and the glaciated Bernese Oberland skyline sits across the valley.
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
The hut is currently closed. The 2026 season ran from June 6 to late September, and the team closed for winter on September 29. It reopens in June 2027 (Rotstockhütte). Book early for July and August weekends, when dorm beds go fast. June and September are quieter, but snow can linger on higher passes early in the season. Check availability through Hut Finder or the hut’s website. Reach Mürren by cable car from Stechelberg or via the Grütschalp railway. From there, the walk up takes roughly two hours. Bring cash as a backup, sturdy boots, and layers, because temperatures drop quickly at this altitude.
