The House of Experiments (Hiša eksperimentov) is Slovenia’s first science center. It opened in 2001 on Trubarjeva cesta, the lively, café-lined street that runs east from Prešeren Square in central Ljubljana. Families and curious adults come here to learn physics by doing it, with no glass cases or “do not touch” signs.
The compact exhibition spaces hold dozens of hands-on stations covering optics, mechanics, sound, electricity and perception. Visitors spin, lift, balance and squint their way through illusions and puzzles, often while staff explain the science behind them. The center is best known for its science shows, built around theatrical demonstrations full of bangs and surprises. It also runs workshops, holiday programs and children’s birthday parties. The playful, slightly handmade atmosphere suits kids from about five upward, though adults routinely get absorbed in the brainteasers.
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
On weekdays, the center often prioritizes school groups, so public opening hours tend to focus on weekends and school holidays. Check the official website for current times and show schedules before you go. Shows are usually presented in Slovenian, but the exhibits work in any language. Weekend afternoons get crowded, so arrive at opening for the quietest experience. The center is a 10-minute walk from Prešeren Square and the Triple Bridge. The street around it is full of casual international eateries, which makes for an easy lunch stop. Metelkova and the main railway station are also within walking distance.
