Hilltop Park crowns the summit of Signal Hill, the small city surrounded by Long Beach, and draws locals for one reason above all: the view. From roughly 365 feet up, the compact park looks across Long Beach, the port cranes, downtown Los Angeles, the Palos Verdes Peninsula and, on clear days, Catalina Island.
Paved walking paths loop past landscaped native plantings, a shaded gazebo, picnic tables and BBQ grills, with interpretive markers recounting the 1921 Alamitos No. 1 gusher that turned this hill into one of California’s richest oil fields. Working pumpjacks still dot the slopes below. The Panorama Promenade runs along the ridge toward Discovery Well Park, giving walkers and joggers a longer route with continuous city-to-sea views. Sunset is the signature moment, when the skyline lights up and the harbor glows orange.
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
Arrive on weekday mornings for quiet paths and the clearest air. Evenings and weekends fill quickly, especially at sunset, and parking along Skyline Drive and nearby residential streets is limited, so respect neighborhood signage. Picnic areas work on a first-come basis; check the City of Signal Hill’s Community Services Department for current hours, rules and any group-use permits. Leashed dogs are welcome. Fitness-minded visitors often climb the steep Hill Street and Temple Avenue approaches as a workout. Bring layers, because ridge winds pick up late in the day.
