SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium occupies the corner of King and Flinders Streets on the north bank of the Yarra River, at the western edge of the CBD. Spread across multiple levels, it houses more than 10,000 animals, and families travel here for close encounters with sharks, penguins and saltwater crocodiles.
The descent through the building ends at the Oceanarium, a 2.2-million-litre tank where grey nurse sharks and stingrays glide over and around a walk-through tunnel. The sub-Antarctic zone keeps king and gentoo penguins on snow and ice, and the crocodile exhibit puts visitors face to face with an enormous saltwater crocodile through thick glass. Rockpool touch areas, seahorses and jellyfish displays keep younger children engaged between the headline tanks. Adventurous visitors can book the Shark Dive Xtreme to enter the Oceanarium themselves. After hours, the aquarium hosts corporate functions and private events against the tank backdrops.
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
The aquarium opens seven days a week. Check the official opening hours before you go, because times shift during school holidays. Book online for discounted tickets. The site also offers combination passes with LEGOLAND Discovery Centre. Weekday mornings and late afternoons are quieter than weekends and Victorian school holidays. Plan your route around the scheduled keeper talks and penguin feeds. Flinders Street Station is about a ten-minute walk away, and trams along Flinders Street stop nearby inside the Free Tram Zone.
