Piazza Gae Aulenti is a raised, circular pedestrian square in Milan’s Porta Nuova district, sitting directly across from Porta Garibaldi station and ringed by the city’s tallest skyscrapers.
Designed by architect Cesar Pelli and opened in December 2012, the square is lifted 6 metres above street level and paved in pale stone, with fountains and integrated seating that light up after dark. It was named for Italian architect and designer Gae Aulenti, who died shortly before its opening.
Alongside the Navigli canals, it’s considered one of Milan’s best areas for an evening out, surrounded by restaurants, bars, and clubs at the base of the towers.
