Hierve el Agua is a cliffside mineral spring site in the Sierra Mixe foothills, about 70 km east of Oaxaca City in the community of San Isidro Roaguía, not within Oaxaca de Juárez itself. Over thousands of years, carbonate-rich spring water spilling over the cliffs left behind white “petrified waterfalls.” Visitors come for the formations, the cliff-edge pools, and the views across the valley (Mexico Travel and Leisure).
From the parking area, a short descent leads to shallow mineral pools above Cascada Chica. The water there is cool, despite the name, which means “the water boils” and comes from bubbling springs. Nearby, Zapotec irrigation canals and terraces cut into the rock date back more than two millennia. Bring cash. Fees of roughly $50–70 MXN are collected at two separate community gates (Hierve el Agua Tours). Arrive at opening, or on a weekday, to beat the tour vans that arrive around midday. The dry season, November through April, gives the clearest skies and firmer trails. Community disputes occasionally cause road blockades or closures, so check updates before you leave (Rutopia).
