Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm Historic Site, at 1200 E. Kansas City Road on the east side of Olathe, is the only remaining stagecoach stop on the Santa Fe Trail preserved for the public. Families and history fans come for hands-on 1860s farming, frontier life and stagecoach travel (TravelKS).
The Mahaffie family settled here in 1857, and their farm later fed and sheltered westbound stage passengers in the years after the Civil War. Today, costumed interpreters guide visitors through the 1865 Mahaffie House, invite them to help with farm chores, and introduce them to the site’s livestock. The signature experience is a ride in a horse-drawn stagecoach, which puts the jolting reality of trail travel into perspective. The timber-frame Heritage Center, with its stone fireplace and enclosed patio, also hosts private events (Mahaffie).
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
Hours have typically been Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m., with the site closed Mondays and Tuesdays (Mahaffie). Schedules shift by season, so confirm current hours and stagecoach availability on the official visit page. October brings Sorghum Saturday and its cane-pressing demonstrations. In summer, Mahaffie has offered free Open Late Thursdays in June and July and 1860s-style Independence Day fireworks (Visit KC). Weekday mornings outside school-field-trip season are usually the quietest. Wear closed-toe shoes for the barnyard, and pair your visit with a stop in downtown Olathe nearby.
