The EAA Aviation Museum sits beside Wittman Regional Airport on Oshkosh’s south side, at 3000 Poberezny Road. It is the year-round home of the Experimental Aircraft Association, and pilots, families and history fans travel here to see more than 200 historic airplanes and roughly 20,000 artifacts (source: AeroVia).
The collection began in 1962 with Steve Wittman’s racing plane. The current building opened in 1983. Inside, the Eagle Hangar recreates a World War II setting with warbirds parked beneath its high roof. The Tower of Flight suspends aircraft overhead, and the galleries trace homebuilt, aerobatic and racing designs that grew out of EAA’s grassroots culture. In the KidVenture Gallery, young visitors can try flight simulators, work hands-on exhibits and learn how wings generate lift (source: EAA).
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
Plan on spending two to three hours here. Weekday mornings outside summer are the quietest times to visit. In late July, EAA AirVenture Oshkosh brings hundreds of thousands of people to the grounds, so expect crowds, higher lodging prices and special event access rules that week. In summer, ask whether the nearby Pioneer Airport is open and whether vintage aircraft rides are available. Parking is on site and easy to reach from I-41. Hours and admission change by season, so check the official museum site before you go. Downtown Oshkosh and the Fox River waterfront are a short drive north if you want food afterward.
