Khao Phala is a forested peak inside the Khao Phra Thaeo Wildlife Sanctuary in Thep Krasattri, Thalang District. The sanctuary protects northern Phuket’s last stretch of evergreen rainforest, and hikers, birders and anyone tired of the beach come here for shaded trails, seasonal waterfalls and real jungle quiet.
The sanctuary covers roughly 23 square kilometers of dense forest, with trails ranging from about 600 meters to 4 kilometers (Island Seeker). Its two best-known cascades, Ton Sai and Bang Pae, sit at either end of the reserve. Expect humid air, buttress-rooted trees, rattan, and steep, root-laced sections that turn slick after rain. Birdlife is the main draw for early risers. Listen for hornbills, bulbuls and sunbirds in the canopy. Near Bang Pae, the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project cares for rescued white-handed gibbons, and you can often hear their calls echo through the valley.
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
Visit between May and October for full waterfalls, or November to April for drier, easier footing with thinner flows. Arrive before 9 a.m. for cooler temperatures, better bird activity and fewer people. Weekends bring local families to the waterfall pools. National park entry fees apply, so carry cash and confirm current rates at the ranger station. Wear grippy shoes and bring insect repellent and plenty of water. Phuket International Airport is about 20 minutes’ drive away, and the Heroines Monument in Thalang is close by. There is no reliable public transit to the sanctuary, so hire a scooter, taxi or driver.
