UCR ARTS is the University of California, Riverside’s downtown arts campus, set on the Main Street pedestrian mall about three miles from the main university grounds. It brings together the California Museum of Photography (founded 1973), the Sweeney Art Gallery (1963), and the Culver Center of the Arts (2010), and it is the place in Riverside where photography is treated as both historical record and art (UCR Events).
The museums occupy adjacent historic buildings on a single block. The photography museum is housed in a former Kress five-and-dime store that has been reworked into open, light-filled galleries. Its collection is anchored by the Keystone-Mast archive of stereographs and glass negatives, along with an extensive holding of historic cameras. Exhibitions rotate between archival material and contemporary work. Next door, the Culver Center adds a screening room for films and events whose start times vary by program (UCR ARTS).
