Riga Cathedral anchors Dome Square in Vecrīga, Riga’s Old Town. Bishop Albert founded it in 1211, and today it is the seat of the Archbishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia (Doms). It is Latvia’s largest medieval church, and visitors come to see eight centuries of architecture in one building and to hear its celebrated organ.
The building’s history shows in its layers. Romanesque portals and heavy brick walls up to two metres thick date from the earliest construction (Latvia Travel Tales). Early Gothic vaulting rises above the nave, and a Baroque spire from the 1770s carries a rooster weathervane. Inside, the 1884 E.F. Walcker organ holds more than 6,700 pipes. Franz Liszt wrote a piece for its inauguration. Leave time for the cloister and its courtyard, where carved stones and old fragments from the city are displayed.

Plan about 1.5 hours, including the cloister (OffPeakTrip). Visit on weekday mornings to avoid summer tour groups and cruise crowds. The cathedral holds regular evening organ and choral concerts (LiveRiga). Book through the official concert calendar, especially from June through August. Entry is ticketed outside of services. St. Peter’s Church and the House of the Blackheads are each a short walk away.
