History Buffs Architecture Sightseeing

Piazza del Popolo is a grand neoclassical square marking the northern entrance to Rome’s historic center, redesigned in its current oval form by architect Giuseppe Valadier between 1811 and 1822. At its center stands the Flaminio Obelisk, brought from Egypt by Augustus in 10 BC and one of the oldest monuments in the city.

The square is flanked by the twin Baroque churches of Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria in Montesanto, and anchored on its north side by the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo, which houses paintings by Caravaggio and Raphael. Three neoclassical fountains and the Porta del Popolo gate, reworked by Bernini, complete the square’s monumental feel.

The piazza is open around the clock and free to visit. A staircase beside the basilica leads up to the Pincio Terrace, offering one of Rome’s best panoramic views — a natural next stop after exploring the square itself.
