San Carlos Beach Park is a 2.87-acre city park at the west end of Cannery Row, where Reeside Avenue meets Monterey Bay beside the Coast Guard Pier. Locals and visitors come for the open lawn, the calm cove, and some of the most accessible shore diving on the California coast.
Landscaped turf slopes down to a small sandy beach, with benches and footpaths facing the water. On weekend mornings, scuba groups in full gear wade out toward kelp beds and the remains of old cannery equipment just offshore, according to See Monterey. Families picnic on the grass and children wade in the protected shallows. Sea otters often float in the kelp, and sea lions bark from the nearby breakwater. The California Beaches guide recommends it more for diving and views than for sunbathing, and the cool, often foggy weather supports that advice.
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
The park is listed as open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. For the quietest visit, come on a weekday. Weekend mornings bring a steady stream of dive classes. Late afternoon and sunset offer the best light over the bay. Summer and holiday weekends fill the nearby metered parking quickly, so arrive early or walk in along the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail, which runs past the park. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is about a mile east along Cannery Row. Old Fisherman’s Wharf lies a short stroll south along the trail. Bring layers, because the bay breeze stays cool even in summer.
