SeaGlass Carousel is an aquarium-themed carousel at the southern tip of Manhattan, inside The Battery near State and Water Streets. Families and tourists come for a short, glowing ride that recalls the park’s history as the first home of the New York Aquarium (source: SeaGlass Carousel).
Designed by WXY architecture and opened in 2015, the spiraling glass-and-steel pavilion takes its shape from a chambered nautilus. Inside, horses are swapped for large, iridescent fiberglass fish. Riders sit within them as they glide and spin across the floor. Shifting projections, colored light and an orchestral soundtrack create an underwater mood that adults enjoy as much as kids (source: The Battery). The darker interior makes the lighting effects especially vivid in the evening.
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
Rides are brief, and tickets are sold on site. Weekday mornings bring the shortest lines. Summer weekends and holiday afternoons draw the longest ones. Hours change by season, so check the official 2026 schedule before you go, and look on Facebook (@seaglasscarousel) for same-day updates.
To get there, take the 1 train to South Ferry, the 4 or 5 to Bowling Green, or the R/W to Whitehall Street. You can easily pair the ride with the Staten Island Ferry, a walk past Castle Clinton, or a Statue of Liberty cruise from the park’s waterfront.
