The Seattle Aquarium sits on the Elliott Bay waterfront at Pier 59, below Pike Place Market. It focuses on the marine life of Puget Sound and the wider Pacific, which draws families and first-time visitors who want to see the region’s waters up close. One ticket covers three buildings: historic Piers 59 and 60 and the newer Ocean Pavilion (Seattle Aquarium).
Visitors enter at Window on Washington Waters, a large tank filled with rockfish and anemones from local waters. From there the route leads past touch pools where kids can handle sea stars and urchins. Sea otters, harbor seals and northern fur seals reliably draw the biggest crowds, especially at feeding talks. A giant Pacific octopus and an underwater dome add more Northwest species. Across the street, the Ocean Pavilion holds a large Indo-Pacific coral reef habitat with sharks and rays. Its rooftop connects to the Overlook Walk up to the Market. An on-site cafe covers lunch.
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
The aquarium opens daily from 9:30am to 6pm, with last entry at 5pm. Check the website for special closures (Seattle Aquarium). Buy timed tickets online, and arrive at opening or after 3pm to avoid summer and weekend crowds. Several areas are open-air, so bring layers. Refill stations let you bring a water bottle. Waterfront parking costs a lot. The Westlake light rail station is roughly a 15-minute walk away, and the Great Wheel and the ferry terminal are both nearby.
