Skansen, on Stockholm’s Djurgården island, is the world’s oldest open-air museum, founded in 1891 to preserve traditional Swedish buildings and ways of life that were disappearing with industrialization. Over 150 historic houses, farmsteads, and workshops were relocated here from across Sweden, ranging from a Sami settlement to an 18th-century manor.
The site doubles as a zoo focused on Scandinavian wildlife, with animals such as brown bears, wolves, lynx, moose, and seals, plus craftspeople demonstrating traditional glassblowing, baking, and printing in the historic buildings. Skansen also hosts the city’s biggest Midsummer and Christmas celebrations, drawing large crowds for seasonal festivities.
Hours vary by season, with extended evening opening in July and early August; because of the size of the site and the mix of history, animals, and crafts, it rewards a leisurely, unhurried visit.
