Toronto Zoo is one of the largest zoos in the world by area, spread across roughly 287 hectares in Scarborough and home to more than 5,000 animals representing over 450 species, organized by continent-themed zones. It’s the largest zoo in Canada and a major day-trip destination from downtown Toronto.
Hours shift seasonally: through early September the zoo is open weekends and holidays from 9:30am to 7pm and weekdays 9:30am to 6pm; from mid-September through mid-October, weekend hours run to 6pm and weekdays to 4:30pm; from mid-October through year-end, the zoo opens daily 9:30am to 4:30pm. Members and some ticket holders get early entry at 9am on weekends and holidays.
Given the size of the grounds, most visitors use the zoo’s shuttle service or plan a route through only a few zones rather than trying to see everything in one visit.
