Fraser River Park occupies a stretch of the Fraser River’s North Arm at the foot of Angus Drive in Vancouver’s Marpole neighbourhood. It is one of the few places in the city where you can walk right up to the working river. Locals come for the boardwalks, the tidal marsh and an off-leash area where dogs can run beside the water.
Wooden walkways cross a restored intertidal marsh. The water level shifts with the tides, and herons often hunt along the reeds. Across the channel you can watch log booms, tugboats and industrial yards on the Richmond shore. Aircraft descend low toward Vancouver International Airport, which makes the park a casual plane-spotting spot. The lawns hold picnic tables with river views, and the gravel shoreline paths link to riverside trails that continue along the Marpole waterfront. The off-leash zone stays busy with regulars and has a friendly, neighbourhood feel.
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
Weekday mornings are the quietest time to visit. Sunny weekend afternoons draw picnickers and dog owners, and the small parking lot fills quickly. For the best light on the marsh, arrive in the hour before sunset. Low tide brings out the most birdlife. Paths can turn muddy after rain, so wear sturdy shoes from October through April. Keep dogs leashed outside the posted off-leash area, and check the City of Vancouver Park Board for current hours and dog rules. Buses run along SW Marine Drive and Granville Street, and Canada Line’s Marine Drive Station is a manageable walk or short bike ride east. Phone: +1 604-873-7000.
