History Buffs Photographers Couples

Ponte di Rialto is the oldest of the four bridges spanning Venice’s Grand Canal, with a wooden predecessor dating back to 1181. The current single-arch stone bridge was completed in 1591 to a design by Antonio da Ponte, who won a competition against Michelangelo, Palladio, and Sansovino to build it. Its 48-meter Istrian stone span was, for centuries, the only way to cross the Grand Canal on foot.

Two covered galleries lined with small shops run the length of the bridge, a shopping tradition stretching back five hundred years, while the central walkway offers one of the great urban views in Europe — gondolas gliding below and palazzo façades curving away along the canal. At the foot of the bridge, the centuries-old Rialto Market and the nearby San Giacomo di Rialto church, thought to be Venice’s oldest, are worth a wander.

The bridge is free and open around the clock; visit early morning or at sunset for the best light and thinner crowds, and be mindful that the stone steps can be slippery when wet.
