Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien occupies a former banking hall at Freyung 8 in Vienna’s Innere Stadt. It is one of Austria’s leading privately run exhibition houses, known for blockbuster retrospectives of classical modernism, post-war avant-garde art and major international artists (source: Vienna Stay Apartments).
The building dates to 1914 and once held the main hall of the Österreichische Creditanstalt. Exhibitions began here in 1985 (source: events.at). Architect Gustav Peichl later redesigned the galleries and added the gilded sphere above the entrance, now a Freyung landmark. The Kunstforum has no permanent collection, so every visit depends on the current show. Past exhibitions have spanned painting from the 19th and 20th centuries to the present (source: museen.de). The smaller tresor space, set in the old bank vault, shows contemporary work. Since 2012 the building has also housed Austria’s Constitutional Court (source: Wikipedia).
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
Check the official website for the current exhibition, opening hours and ticket prices before you go. Major retrospectives draw heavy weekend crowds, especially in their opening and closing weeks. Weekday mornings are the quietest time to visit, and booking a timed ticket online saves queuing. The U2 stops at Schottentor and the U3 at Herrengasse, both a short walk away. Afterwards, Palais Ferstel, Café Central and the Schottenstift are all close by.
