The Mayborn Museum Complex sits on the southern edge of Baylor University’s campus near the Brazos River. Its 143,000 square feet of hands-on galleries cover the natural science and cultural history of Central Texas. Families come for the interactive Discovery Rooms, and history lovers come for the 19th-century village out back (Mayborn Museum).
Opened in 2004, the complex incorporates collections from Baylor’s Strecker Museum, which dates to the 1890s. Visitors walk through full-scale dioramas, including a recreation of the Waco Mammoth Site where Columbian mammoth fossils were found. Exploration stations cover geology, paleontology, archaeology and natural history (Visit Waco). Younger kids head for the Discovery Rooms, where they can dig, build and experiment. Outside, the Gov. Bill and Vara Daniel Historic Village recreates a late-1800s Texas cotton-farming community. Its wooden buildings include a schoolhouse, a church and a general store.
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
Weekday afternoons are the quietest times to visit, since school field trips usually fill the morning hours. Saturdays and Baylor home-game weekends draw the biggest crowds. Hours and admission can change, so check the museum’s official site or call 254-710-1110 before you go. Allow at least two to three hours, and wear comfortable shoes for the outdoor village. Free parking is available near the entrance. You can pair a visit with the Waco Mammoth National Monument to see the real fossil site, or cross town to the Dr Pepper Museum downtown.
