The National Mall is Washington DC’s vast, T-shaped stretch of monuments, memorials, and Smithsonian museums, running from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial. Because the Mall covers roughly two miles end to end, most visitors plan a self-guided walking tour of the monuments in three to five hours, while a thorough visit including several museums can easily fill two to three days. Admission to the National Mall and most Smithsonian museums is free, though the Capitol, Washington Monument, and Ford’s Theatre require timed-entry reservations.
Early morning or late afternoon light is best for photos at the memorials, and visiting on weekdays helps avoid the heaviest crowds that build during peak tourist season and around national holidays.
