Surprise Corner is a free roadside viewpoint where Buffalo Street meets Tunnel Mountain Road, about 1.6 km from downtown Banff. It frames the 1888 Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel across the Bow River valley, with Sulphur Mountain rising behind it. That pairing has made it one of the most photographed views in Banff National Park.
The name comes from the way the view appears suddenly as you round the bend on Buffalo Street (Town of Banff). From the railed platform across from a small parking lot, you look down on the Bow River near Bow Falls. Beyond it, the hotel’s stone towers and copper roofs sit against forested slopes, with the Spray Valley opening to the left (The Banff Blog). A telephoto lens compresses the hotel against the mountain, and a wide lens captures the river bend. The Hoodoos Trail starts nearby. Stairs lead down to riverside paths that connect to the town’s trail network.
Visitor Highlights & Practical Info
The viewpoint is open year-round during daylight hours, and there is no entry fee. You will still need a Parks Canada pass to stop in the national park. The parking lot is small and fills quickly from mid-morning in summer. To avoid tour groups, arrive at sunrise or in the early evening. Golden-hour light warms the hotel’s facade, and snowy winter mornings bring the fewest crowds. Walking from Banff Avenue takes about 20 to 25 minutes via Buffalo Street or the Bow River trail. In winter, wear traction cleats, because the stairs and platform ice over.
